Ann Marie Kennedy Receives Leavey Award

Grant Union High School teacher, Ann Marie Kennedy, was one of fifteen educators from schools throughout the United States presented with the Annual Leavey Awards for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge at a gala awards dinner at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia on Saturday, March 17.

Kennedy, a high school teacher at Grant Union High School, received this honor for her "EAT from the Garden" salsa business. EAT from the Garden is a student-run salsa business operated by the seniors in the Environmental Science and Design (GEO) Academy located at Grant Union High School. The product's name originates from the school and community garden that the students planted at their high school. Seniors enrolled in the economics and business class learn to manage their student-run business throughout the school year. They gain 21st Century skills - learning about responsibility and the world beyond their neighborhood by operating a salsa business. Students oversee their products from seed to consumer; and learn through field trips to the local tomato farm, processor, and bottler. Students manage every aspect of the business. They market and sell both traditional and spicy peach salsas, and manage the bookkeeping, inventory and operation details that keep the business going and growing. Their classroom is transformed into a min-company headquarters with each student working on sales, operations, marketing or finance teams. Students spend their Saturdays selling and conducting product demos of their delicious salsa at local grocery stores, famers' markets, school and community events.

"I honestly am so grateful for making it this far, for the driven team i get to coach everyday, and the most supportive parents ever! I started out this program three years ago with three freshman who became the foundation of Pacer V.B, now seniors are Gregory Grady, Charles Faraimo, and Shaft Wesley. Its been quite a journey, but it doesn't end here. This season hands down, has been the best season we've ever had! I am so proud of my team and all the hard work they've put forth on making this season what it is today." -Coach R. Faraimo
