Through it All, Nothing Can Stop Me from Being Successful

“I love to play basketball, because it’s my favorite sport. As a child, my grandmother was more like my inspiration in everything I did and accomplished. I’ve experienced my grandmother passing away my 6th grade year. It was different when she was not there to support me at my games, so I dedicated them all to her” (said Ms. Johnson). She has played basketball for Grant Union High all 4 years. She played Junior Varsity her freshmen year. Senior year, she was on and off the team because of family problems. “I stopped playing during my senior year, but I realized that I could not give up on myself or my teammates.” At age 17 Ms. Johnson is now accepted into Langston University, but is still contemplating about basketball on a higher level. Basketball is just not a hobby it was a way to escape her problems in a positive way.

Talbot Continues to Strive for Success!

“My dream has always been to play in the W.N.B.A.” –Says Shawnyce Talbot. Coming from a home full of discipline, stands a 5’4 powerhouse who has achieved great success on the court and in the class room. She has won many awards and is an all-around athlete. Although she dominates the sport of softball and conquers the sport of volleyball, her main sport is basketball. Despite all of the negative energy coming from most of her classmates and teachers, she still finds a way to gain success.

Shawnyce Lashawn Talbot has grown up in a home where she’s seen a lot. From seeing brothers run away, to sleeping in cars. She has grown up to be a very successful Athletic Black Woman. “From day one of the first grade, I made sure all of my homework was done because I was always inspired to be better than my parents.”- Says Shawnyce. Although she has been through many trials and tribulations she has broke through them all on top.

“Because of me seeing my mother get abused, I have made up my mind, that when I grow up I will take care of her.” –says Shawnyce. Not only is she sticking to that mindset, but she is doing it with ease. She is sticking to her goal with the tools of basketball and school. There has never been a school year where she has achieved a C or lower. Always on top of her game she is still receiving calls from all types basketball AAU coaches and  is still striving towards success and more.

The Delta Valley Conference League: Coach of the Year

The Delta Valley Conference League: Coach of the Year

Thanks to his peers, Coach David Kendrick was nominated coach of the year of the Delta Valley Conference League in 2011-2012 year. Coach Dave has been coaching girl’s basketball at Grant High School for over ten years and works hard every year to get his players prepared for season.

“It was a great honor to have been recognized by my peers,” coach said to the press. “I planned ahead of time by conditioning off-season and having a good pre-season.” He stated. Coach Dave continues to coach and do the best he can to help his players be the best they can be. During the season his team made it to the playoffs but lost the first round. Coach was still proud of them and was glad they came very far. When you love a sport as much as Coach Dave does you will gain confidence and pride. I feel that his team this year had overcome many obstacles and had a good season, and that made him very proud.

Other coaches stated that Coach Dave is a very good coach and hope he continues to help young ladies strive to be the best and achieve their goals. Hopefully it will be a great season for Coach and his team next year.
